Black and white photo of a man with glasses, shoulder-length hair, and a beard, sitting indoors near a window with curtains, wearing a denim jacket. Jon Rode, photographer. Edmonton, Alberta.

It took me 30 years to realize I’m an artist. Photography has gifted me that. The camera has given voice to my inner life and taught me to embrace feeling and intuition. Each photograph I take is a small expression of self. Photography combines my love of art and culture and allows me to tell stories and ask questions. Most importantly, it teaches me.

I am most inspired by the mid-century humanist tradition of photography: people and the everyday experience. I’m also moved by architecture and how it shapes our lifestyle, our values, and our behaviours. Being surrounded by the intentionality and purpose of architecture makes all the difference; I live in a historic neighbourhood in Edmonton, and I see it every day. It brings perspective and serves as a challenge to our self-importance; a reminder of our smallness and how lucky we are to simply exist.
