Please Be You
This is an unreleased song by John Mayer that was written in 2014 but only recently debuted on his radio show, Life with John Mayer. It was not released because someone at the time said it sounded a bit too close to Bob Dylan’s If Not For You, and he agreed.
This is a special song. In typical Mayer-fashion, it’s honest, heartfelt, and cuts deep. I can’t wait for the live acoustic performances.
If you wrote right now “I wonder why it wasn’t meant to be”
I’d probably take the blame
and say it’s me
If you wrote right nowIf you wrote right now
I would talk to you in measured tones
Give you love and leave the past alone
If you wrote right nowPlease be you
Please be you
C’mon, please be youIf you wrote right now
I’d stop and hold the moment dear
I’d let you know your home is always here
If you wrote right nowIf you wrote right now
I’d mouth the words “I miss you all the time”
And I’d go with you before you changed your mind
If you wrote right nowPlease be you
Please be you
C’mon, please be youIf you wrote right now
I’d realize my luck ain’t all that bad
It’d be the best goodnight I ever had
If you wrote right nowPlease be you
Please be you
C’mon, please be youPlease be you
C’mon, please be you
Please be you
