“Do you know…!?”

I know some name-droppers. With one particular individual, on multiple occasions, I’ve completely zoned out of their storytelling knowing it was mostly filled with random shoutouts to people I didn’t know (and don’t give a fuck about).

Why do they do this? To impress us? I don’t give a rats ass who you know (unless the person in question can get me a job - hey now I’m listening).

All these these individuals have huge social circles. I think it gets them off. How can one possibly maintain that many friendships and genuine connections with that many people? I bet more are acquaintances than friends. Maybe it’s one giant feedback loop of social-clout-seeking “cool kids” looking to grow their circle with the local who’s who. Maybe there’s an unspoken solidarity of insincere bullshit that permeates their interactions. They know it’s bullshit but push through the ruse anyways. Eventually the payoff is glorious as they can regale wait staff with inane anecdotes about the last time they were having a drink with the owner (true story).

Sometimes I’m constantly reliving Portlandia’s "did you read it?" sketch, except it’s “do you know…”
